Osh to Dushanbe Pamir Highway Trip – 9 days
Explore the planet’s epic road trip Pamir Highway: one of the wildest roads in the world. Stretching more than 1,200km between the cities of Osh in Kyrgyzstan and Dushanbe in Tajikistan, the Pamir Highway Road Trip travels through savage wilderness, ranging from high desert to snowy mountains and crossing passes of more than 4,000m. It is likely inhabited by more snow leopards and spiral-horned Marco Polo sheep than humans are. Stay with local people along the way and experience the Pamiri culture. Enjoy panoramic views while doing short hikes on your tour.

Itinerary: Osh city – Lenin Peak base camp – Karakul Lake – Murgab village – Bulungkul Lake – Wakhan Valley – Khorog -Jiseu Valley – Dushanbe
Day 1: Osh city – Tulpar Kol Lake at Lenin Peak Base Camp
Accommodation – yurt stay, Driving – 5 hrs
Breakfast. Drive to Sarymogol village, 4hr. A nice valley opens up when you reach Taldyck pass (3600 meters) with green pastures and yaks grazing around. Arrive in Sarymogol village and cross the bridge to get to the yurt camp at Tulparkol lake (3500 m) next to Lenin Peak Base Camp, 1hr. Enjoy the beauty of snowcapped mountains. Walk around this turquoise alpine lake Tulparkol. Overnight & dinner in a yurt.
Day 2: Tulpar Kol Lake to Karakul Lake in Tajikistan, 4-5 hrs
Accommodation – homestay, Driving – 4 hrs, Hiking – 5 hours
Early breakfast. Take a day hike from your yurt camp to the Traveler’s pass at 4130 meters, 3 hrs. Enjoy the beauty of glaciers while walking up to the pass. Rest at the top of the Traveler’s pass to gaze at glaciers tumbling off the massive peak. Back to your yurts, 2 hrs. Lunch in a yurt. Drive to the check point, 2hr. Cross the borders and travel to Karakul lake in Tajikistan, 2 hrs. A barren and moonlike landscape opens up saying that this is a Great Pamir Highway. Be accommodated in a guesthouse. A short walk around the lake.
Note: All the hikes in this itinerary are self-guided. We can provide you with a GPS for hiking so that you don’t get lost.
Day 3: Karakul Lake to Alichur village via Murgab town
Accommodation – homestay, Driving – 6 hrs,
Travel goes on to Murgab via the highest pass Akbaital (4655 m) you will ever do in Tajikistan, 3hr. Take photos of glaciers on the pass. Lunch in Murgab village. After walk-in Murgab and lunch, you head on to Alichur village, 3 hrs. Arrival in Alichur village. Overnight and dinner in a local guesthouse.
Day 4: Alichur to Langar village in Wakhan Valley via Bulunkul & Yashil Kul Lakes
Accommodation – homestay, Driving – 6 hrs, Hiking: 3 hours
Breakfast. We take a side trip to visit alpine lakes Bulunkul & Yashylkul right after we start the journey. Walk around these turquoise alpine lakes. Drive back to the main road and head up to the Kargush pass (4 344m). Arrive at the Kargush pass and start the 3-4 hr trek to the mountains top called Panorama Ridge at 4800 meters. You will be rewarded with a stunning view of the Wakhan Range of Afghanistan in a distance on top of the pass. The whole valley of Great Pamir at the foot of Wakhan Range looks otherworldly. Hike back to your car and drive along the Panj river dividing Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Try to spot nomadic Afghan Kyrgyz caravans on the way. The scenic and towering Mountains of the Hindu Kush in Pakistan welcome you right before entering Wakhan valley. Overnight and dinner in a friendly homestay in Langar village.
Day 5: Langar – Trek to Engel’s Peak – Yamg Village
Accommodation – homestay, Hiking – 9 hrs
We depart Langar early today as you have the opportunity to trek one of the most beautiful trails along the entire Wakhan Valley: the challenging 9-hour return trip to the 4000m-high meadows at the base of Engel’s Peak. You will be rewarded with remarkable views of the Hindu Kush and alpine streams. This is known as being one of the best side trips along the Pamir Highway, and we have no doubt that you’ll be blown away with this unique opportunity to get deeper into the Pamir Mountains. Lunch on the edge of a lake at the meadows, before climbing back down to the highway to meet our drivers. Afterward, you continue onto the village Yamg village, with its wonderful terraced farmland. Tonight, you stay in a local homestay.
Footnote: The trek takes 5 hours up and 4 hours down. The trail goes slowly up, moderate.
Day 6: Yamg Village – Khorog City
Accommodation – hotel/hostel, Driving – 6 hrs,
We leave the village Langar and continue our way towards the town Khorog, one of the main towns along the Pamir Highway. Be amazed as the scenic Hindi Kush Mountains stretch out with Afghan and Pamiri villages along the Panj river with local farmers across the river going about their daily lives. At Yamchun village, we will find the 12th-century Yamchun Fortress, with one of the most sensational views along the entire region. The nearby Babi Fatima Hot Springs is also a great spot to stop, and for those who are interested, you can bathe in their natural waters (note that clothing is forbidden inside the hot springs, and men and women are separated). We’ll stop off at the Ishkashim Fortress along the way before Ishkashim village. Here, we exit Wakhan Valley and drive towards the town Khorog.
Day 7: Khorog City – Jiseu Valley

Today you drive towards the Bartang Valley and begin an adventure that may prove to be your favorite part of the trip. The 4x4s will drop you off at the trailhead to Jizeu Valley and you will commence a truly spectacular 2-hour hike to the remote Jizeu Village. The views you will discover on this hike are barren and wild, and this is known for being one of the real highlights of the Pamir Highway, that very few travelers visit. There are no roads to this village, so you will need to take your supplies for one night staying with local families. You do not need to bring much with you – just a change of clothes, medication, water for the hike and your camera gear, and everything else will stay with our driver in the 4x4s. You can have lunch and dinner at homestays in Jizeu Village. This is an isolated region, and you will only be able to organize your accommodation once you arrive in the village. Food, blankets, pillows and water is provided at the homestay. Take a walk around the village to admire small alpine lakes formed by pure spring waters.
Day 8: Jizeu Village – Khalaikhum Village
Accommodation – homestay, Driving – 5 hrs, Hiking – 2 hrs
Wake up for sunrise in the remote Jizeu Valley before having breakfast. Once you collect your belongings, you say goodbye to your wonderful hosts and hike back towards the main road. Our driver will meet you where you were dropped off yesterday and we will continue the journey towards Kalaikhum with plenty of photo stops along the way. In Kalaikhum, you can stay in a comfortable homestay.
Day 9: Khalaikhum – Dushanbe City
Accommodation – hotel, Driving – 7 hrs,
Breakfast. Travel to Dushanbe along the Panj river through numerous local villages along the way. Deep rocky valleys and gorgeous mountains accompany you up to the Shurobod pass before Kulab village. Lunch in a Chaikana (local cafes). Visit 11th-century Hulbuk Palace on the way and enjoy the views of the world’s highest hydro power station Nurek in a distance. Arrival in Dushanbe. Accommodation in your hotel.
