“GBAO” stands for Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast, which is the eastern region of Tajikistan where the Pamir Highway runs. Travelers wanting to travel along the Pamir Highway must have a GBAO permit in addition to a Tajik visa. Please print it out to show at checkpoints.
For nationalities that have visa-free entry to Tajikistan, we can take care of the GBAO permit for you as an additional service. Otherwise, you can get a GBAO permit at the OVIR office in Dushanbe or through the Tajik Embassy in your country.
If you need to apply for a Tajikistan e-visa then select the option to include the GBAO permit (additional $20) when you apply.
All our Pamir Highway tour packages remind travelers of the GBAO permit requirement. Without the GBAO permit, you will be turned back at the border and regional checkpoints, so it’s essential to have it arranged before you start your Pamir adventure.
