Insurance

Most rental vehicles are fully insured by Insurance Companies. You have to check with the rental agency about the status of the vehicle. However, most insurance agencies in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan don’t have insurance for the components part of the vehicle. In the event of damage to the vehicle or a car breakdown, it will be at your cost to defray them. The cost can be deducted from the security deposit.

Security Deposit

Renter will be required to provide a security deposit to Owner in the amount of 500 to 1000 USD to be used in the event of loss or damage to the Rental Vehicle
during the term of this Car Rental Agreement. The owner may, in lieu of collection of a security deposit, place a hold on a credit card in the same amount. In the event of damage to the Rental Vehicle, the Owner will apply this Security Deposit to defray the costs of necessary repairs or replacement.

Road Conditions

Road conditions are good in Kyrgyzstan, in general. However, some mountain passes are still closed in late May or early June. You have to check it with your company to get some advice on your planned route. Use an “app” called Maps.me. It can also work offline. Upload it to your phone. It almost marks all the main road. You should know that most of the scenic attractions are in the mountainous regions. It is highly recommended to have 4×4 for your own safety and enjoy nature. It is better to ask your company to give an extra tire.

How much is the car rental rate in Kyrgyzstan

Rates for car rentals differ by the modal of the vehicle and operation area. In general, the low-scale car rentals cost around $35 to $50 per day. Upscale car rentals like a Toyota Land Cruisers or 4Runner will run upwards from $100 to $150 per day.
You will also pay for delivery of the vehicle to a certain point. It usually starts at 100 to 150 USD per delivery. For example, most companies charge 100 USD to return the car back to Bishkek if you pick the car in Bishkek and finish it in Osh city.

Car breakdown on the road

A mechanic will come in a few hours to fix the car if it breaks down nearby village or city. You should have 24/7 days call-telephone number of the company. Otherwise, a car rental company will send another car. You should wait until it arrives.

What type of car to rent

I offer the following cars to rent if you are driving on unpaved high land roads. These are the best cars at a higher rate to rent. But you never get stuck on the road. However, you have to check the route you drive. Most of the roads connecting cities and some village are in good conditions, so you don’t need 4WD cars, just normal can be OK.

Toyota Land Cruiser / Model 100 Series
Toyota Land Cruiser / Model 80 Series
Toyota Land Cruiser / Model 105 Series
Toyota 4Runner
Mitsubishi Pajero

Gasoline:

Locals either use gasoline ( petrol) levels like 92 and 95. For rental operation, your agency asks to use 95 level which is good for driving effectively. Some gas stations in remote villages don’t have level 95, so you can use 92 in those areas.

Mileage restrictions

Most rental companies put limits on mileage. Mileage on the vehicle will be limited as follows: 300 or 400 km per day. Any mileage on the vehicle in excess of this limitation will be subject to an excess mileage surcharge about 0,3 USD per km. However, you have to know that driving more than 300-400 km can be exhausting in Kyrgyzstan roads except for specific situations. So the above mileage limit is normal naturally.

Car rental in Tajikistan

You have to know that most car rental agencies in Kyrgyzstan extend their services to Tajikistan as well. You can still use them for Tajikistan even. Or you can use the local car rental companies of Tajikistan.

Paperwork
  1. Make sure the rental vehicle car has all the appropriate documents or papers. Companies always make prepare it before the rental deal happens.
  2. You and agency sign a Car Rental Agreement and the deal is done. You can see here our car rental agreement. Most agencies use similar agreements.
  3. Just with the car rental agreement, you are not authorized to drive in Tajikistan as you do in Kyrgyzstan. You need notary authorized paper to drive. This paper is gained by your rental agency. They will ask your passport copy and go to a notary to get this paper. It can be done proir to your arrival in Tajikistan.

Most companies usually have 20 or 40-liter container tunks for petrol. You should ask your agency to give you one. Fill it up and put it on your trunk. You can use in case you run out petrol on the way

Road Conditions

Well, the most interesting parts of Tajikistan are in Pamirs which has the worst road conditions. Only some parts of the road are good which had been paved during the Soviet period. No improvements since that time at all. This highland road Pamir Highway is good for self-drive starting from late June to late September. However, some mountain passes are still closed in June. You have to check it with your company to get some advice on your planned route. Use an “app” called Maps.me. It can also work offline. Upload it to your phone. The actual Pamir Highway Road is as follows.

Just driving on it will help you to see much about Pamir Highway. However, it doesn’t give you the full experience of what Great Pamir Highway is. You should go beyond from the main road to see the highlights of Pamirs with its history, local life, and scenic mountains. In the next map, I will put the Pamir Highway Road with side trips on the way and the possible hikes.

The red line points out the worst and dangerous roads. They are not recommended for self-drive. Even most drivers avoid taking these roads. However, you can still drive on them if there are two or more cars in your group.
